The
first successful climb to Mt. Apo was recorded on year 1880 by a group of
climbers led by Don Joaquin Rajal, a Spanish Politico General in Davao City.
Their route was via the strenuous Sibulan Trail in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
The trail is a mix of different features like river trekking, jungle assault,
boulder and sulfur vents and the exciting 87 degrees track, an assault
considered by many as the last full push before reaching the mighty summit.
Mt.
Apo has been part of LOGSAC’s history. It was the climb of this blogger and
buddy Danrev Broñola last October 2004 that gave birth to this club. From then
on, the mountain is considered by the club as their ultimate backyard. We have
climbed this mountain countless times. The rare opportunity for others has been
our proverbial climbing site and we are proud of that.
What
makes Sta. Cruz trail more fun to climb is the boulders portion which occupies
a major portion to Sta. Cruz part. Several rock formations, some as huge as
normal houses, are being laid in the area for climbers to endure amidst strong
wind and rain or the scorching heat of the sun. The boulders trail is one of
the most challenging track and climbing Mt. Apo without passing this area is
not a worthy idea.
